Type S Thermocouple
Platinum rhodium thermocouple material for continuous high-temperature measurement
Type S is a noble-metal thermocouple type that uses Platinum 10% Rhodium as the positive leg and pure Platinum as the negative leg. It is commonly used for clean high-temperature furnace, laboratory, and calibration-related applications.
Thermometrics manufactures Type S thermocouple assemblies as noble-metal probes, ceramic protection-tube assemblies, furnace sensors, and custom high-temperature assemblies built around the process environment.
Common Type S RFQ details
Type S temperature range
Type S is commonly referenced for approximately -58°F to 2700°F (-50°C to 1480°C). The practical assembly rating depends on atmosphere, protection tube material, insulation, mounting style, and contamination control.
Type S thermocouple material
Type S uses Platinum 10% Rhodium for the positive conductor and pure Platinum for the negative conductor. Protection from contamination is important for stable high-temperature noble-metal service.

When to review alternatives
Type R is similar and may be reviewed for clean high-temperature service. Type B may be reviewed for very high-temperature clean-air applications. Type K or Type N may be more economical where base-metal thermocouples are acceptable.
