Platinum rhodium thermocouple material for clean high-temperature service

Type R is a noble-metal thermocouple type that uses Platinum 13% Rhodium as the positive leg and pure Platinum as the negative leg. It is used for clean high-temperature furnace, heat-treat, laboratory, and calibration-critical applications.

Thermometrics manufactures Type R thermocouple assemblies as noble-metal probes, ceramic protection-tube assemblies, furnace sensors, and custom high-temperature assemblies built around the process environment.

Common Type R RFQ details

  • Temperature range and atmosphere
  • Grounded, ungrounded, or exposed junction
  • Sheath or protection tube material
  • Insertion length, lead length, and termination
  • Calibration or tolerance documentation requirements

Type R temperature range

Type R is commonly referenced for approximately -58°F to 2700°F (-50°C to 1480°C). The practical assembly rating depends heavily on atmosphere, protection tube material, insulation, mounting style, and contamination control.

Type R thermocouple material

Type R uses Platinum 13% Rhodium for the positive conductor and pure Platinum for the negative conductor. Because noble-metal thermocouples are sensitive to contamination, protection tube selection and process atmosphere matter.

When Type R is a strong fit

  • Clean high-temperature furnace and heat-treat service
  • Laboratory and calibration-critical measurement
  • Applications requiring noble-metal thermocouple stability
  • Ceramic protection-tube and high-temperature probe assemblies

When to review alternatives

Type S is similar and commonly reviewed for high-temperature reference and furnace work. Type B may be reviewed for very high-temperature clean-air applications. Type K or Type N may be more economical where base-metal thermocouples are suitable.
